What does it mean for Christians to run toward the fire? First responders are heroes who run toward fire to rescue others. In the Bible, God is frequently described as a fire. He is the source of power and passion that fire represents. Running toward God does not put us in danger. When Christians run toward the fire of God, we pursue a closer relationship with him.
Â
Jesus is our ultimate rescuer. He ran toward certain death to save us from sin. When we trust him as our Savior, he calls on us to also lay down our lives for other people (John 15:12-14). Many Christians may not face physical death to tell others about salvation through Jesus. Instead, we may be rejected, ridiculed, or persecuted. We give up our selfish ambitions and desire for approval to follow Jesus fully. Being a disciple of Jesus requires courage, commitment, and training.
Â
Christian revival can also be described as a fire. When revival occurs, Holy Spirit ignites a fervent desire in believers to love and obey Jesus (Hebrews 12:18-29). We become first responders in God’s service. We listen for his call to rescue others from sin and death by telling them about Jesus. When God puts us on the front line of revival, he may send us to people in spiritual crisis to help them. We could end up running toward danger to save others.
Â
Run Toward the Fire will encourage us to go deeper in our relationship with Jesus in three essential ways:
Â
1. Embrace: We will learn to embrace the consuming fire of our Holy God that cleanses us from sin and calls us to service. We do this through repentance and restoration to a relationship of loving submission to his will (John 14:15; 1 Corinthians 3:10-16).
2. Empower: We will explore how the fire of Holy Spirit empowers us to surrender to God in trust and humility. We can do nothing on our own. We must rest in the work of Jesus so we can do the good works he calls us to do (Matthew 3:11; John 15:1-5).
3. Engage:Â We will engage with the fire of God to reach out to others who need salvation and encouragement. We do this through obedience as Holy Spirit guides us in our actions (Matthew 28:18-20; John 15:7-11).
Â
The mission of Run Toward the Fire is to equip Christians as first responders on the front line of revival by providing resources for spiritual growth. The blog will offer in-depth Bible studies, links to quality training sites, and posts that challenge us to increase our faith in practical ways. The goal is to ignite a fire in our souls that compels us to share the love of Jesus with the world. As the end time approaches before the return of Jesus, that fire must be so deeply rooted in us that it cannot be extinguished by fear, persecution or hardship.
